Joined Up Care Derbyshire is committed to making its website accessible, in accordance with the Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) (No. 2) Accessibility Regulations 2018. 

This accessibility statement is for the Joined Up Care Derbyshire website only. It does not cover any subsites, microsites, or any websites linked from this one. 

Compliance status

This website is partially compliant with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines version 2.2 AA standard, due to the areas of non-compliance and the exemptions listed below.

This website is run by NHS Derby and Derbyshire Integrated Care Board. We want as many people as possible to be able to use this website. For example, that means you should be able to:

  • zoom in up to 200% with text staying visible on the screen, and most images scaling without resolution loss
  • navigate most of the website using a keyboard
  • navigate most of the website using speech recognition software
  • read most of the website using a screen reader, including the latest versions of JAWS, NVDA, and VoiceOver
  • read most of the website on devices without a screen, like a Braille computer.

We’ve made the website text as simple as possible to understand, aiming for a reading age of a 12-year-old. Some of our content is technical, and we use technical terms where there is no easier wording we could use without changing what the text means.

How accessible this website is

We know some parts of this website are not fully accessible:

  • most older PDF documents are not fully accessible to screen reader software
  • visual content often does not have alternative text descriptions
  • content set out in tables is not always appropriately formatted
  • some video content is not subtitled
  • you cannot modify the line height or spacing of text

Non-accessible content

The content listed below is non-accessible for the following reasons:

(a) non-compliance with the accessibility regulations

We have a large number of old documents which were not produced in accessible formats.

We know that these documents will fail on the following Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.2 criteria:

Success Criterion 1.1.1 Non-text Content because they contain images or visual content that do not have text alternatives. Additionally, we know that some hyperlinks are not written using descriptive text.

Success Criterion 1.3.1 Info and Relationships because the NHS “service finder” application programming interface does not allow for appropriate labels.

Success criterion 2.1.1 Keyboard: The close button within the hamburger menu cannot be accessed using the keyboard.

Success Criterion 2.4.10 Section Headings because documents have not always been formatted with correct heading and hierarchy structures.

Guideline 1.2 Time-based Media because video content is hosted on the site that in some instances is not subtitled. 

A further audit of the website was carried out to the WCAG 2.2 AA standard.

Joined Up Care Derbyshire is aware of accessibility issues with the website content. A full audit of the site content was carried out in July 2023. This audit was carried out manually, by a communications officer reviewing the content, page by page. This review highlighted a number of issues that Joined Up Care Derbyshire is working through. An action plan includes work to:

  • develop an organisation-wide policy for production of accessible documents
  • training to ensure content is published in language appropriate for the majority of Derbyshire citizens
  • amend non-descriptive links, add subtitles where appropriate, add alt text where appropriate
  • simplify language and content where appropriate.

Joined Up Care Derbyshire aims to implement this action plan during the fourth quarter of 2023/24.

Joined Up Care Derbyshire aims to carry out a full audit of the website content annually, on the anniversary of go-live, ie at the beginning of July each year.

(b) disproportionate burden 

We have conducted a disproportionate burden assessment and are working to improve the accessibility of the content we publish now and in the future.

In summary we know that there are issues with:

  • Our board papers and our archive of board papers
  • Our annual reports and our archive of annual reports
  • We host a large number of downloadable documents on some of our pages

because:

  • Images may not have alt text embedded
  • Heading hierarchies may not be correctly used
  • Diagrams and other visual presentations are not described in text.

Preparation of this accessibility statement

This statement was prepared on 1 July 2022. It was last reviewed on 23 November 2023.

This website was last tested on 24 November 2023. Our contracted web developer and technical support company Michael Oglesby of WP Solutions carried out the test. The website was tested using axeDevTools and visual inspection.
