There is increasing evidence of the impacts of climate change upon the environment and human health. The NHS has acknowledged its responsibility in this agenda and has committed to achieving a net-zero health service by 2045.

As part of this commitment, the NHS must produce Green Plans, at both Trust and system level, which detail the actions to be taken towards achieving the net zero targets. NHS partners across Joined Up Care Derbyshire have worked together to refresh the system level Green Plan for 2025 -28.

The journey since our very first green plan in 2022 has been one of discovery, progress and genuine achievement, and the green plan refresh has allowed us to celebrate just how far we have come and even more importantly to set our sights on what is next.

This Green Plan is focussed on several key areas of focus (listed below), and summarises our  achievements to date, system priorities and how we will measure success.

  • Workforce and Leadership
  • Net Zero and Clinical Transformation
  • Digital Transformation
  • Medicines
  • Travel and Transport
  • Estates and Facilities
  • Procurement and Supply Chain
  • Adaptation

This Green Plan aims to further embed sustainability into the fabric of how we work as NHS organisations and ensuring that sustainability is a collective system responsibility and part of our core business.
