Bolsover and North East Derbyshire

North East Derbyshire district has a population of around 100,000, and its main towns are Dronfield, Killamarsh, Eckington, and Clay Cross. Together, they represent a mix of industrial heritage and stunning rural landscapes on the edge of the Peak District National Park – offering a blend of heritage and modern regeneration.

In this district, Governance is shared between Derbyshire County Council and North East Derbyshire District Council, supported by active town and parish councils. Healthcare provision includes Chesterfield Royal Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, local GP practices, and the five Primary Care Networks of South Hardwick PCN; Chesterfield & Dronfield PCN; Derbyshire Dales PCN; North East Derbyshire PCN, and North Hardwick & Bolsover PCN.

Bolsover District is predominantly rural and includes four market towns Clowne, Bolsover, Shirebrook, and South Normanton, with a population of approximately 78,000. It has an industrial heritage and was a major producer of coal. Mining was the main industry but has been largely replaced by low-skilled, low paid employment opportunities.

In this district, there are three Primary Care Networks; North Hardwick and Bolsover, North East Derbyshire (covering Clowne and Barlborough) and South Hardwick (covering South Normanton and Pixton). With no acute care or general hospital and no sixth form or further education, residents travel to areas of Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire. (Residents in the north generally access hospital services in Chesterfield, Bassetlaw, Nottinghamshire and in the south across Nottinghamshire and Amber Valley).

Bolsover District has some of the most challenging health indicators across Derbyshire County. It is the most deprived District and has the lowest life expectancies for males and females in Derbyshire.

The Neighbourhood Alliance is committed to improving health and wellbeing through these key priorities:

  • Collaborative working to enable more community based, preventative and integrated to improve health outcomes and reduce inequalities.
  • Developing integrated neighbourhood teams initially focussed around those with more complex care requirements.
  • Developing opportunities for collaborative working across mental health and children’s services.
  • Aligning with existing Partnerships (Health & Wellbeing and Bolsover Partnership) to focus on tackling wider determinants of health and reducing causes of ill health such as smoking, substance misuse, obesity and low physical activity.
