Community pharmacies to offer emergency contraception from today
People across Derby and Derbyshire are now able to access emergency contraception (the ‘morning after pill’) directly at their local community pharmacy, for free, without needing a GP appointment or visiting a sexual health clinic.
This national expansion of the NHS Pharmacy Contraception Service creates additional capacity in primary care and sexual health clinics, allowing them to focus on more complex assessments while enabling pharmacy teams to deliver vital care.
Lindsey Fairbrother, Pharmacist at Good Life Pharmacy in Derbyshire said “I’m really pleased that emergency contraception is being added to the national pharmacy service specification.
“I regularly support people who come in needing emergency contraception, and these consultations often open the door to longer conversations about contraception options.
“I’ve had patients who came in for emergency contraception and left with a plan for ongoing care that suits their needs.
“Knowing that most of our pharmacies can now offer this service on the NHS means more people will get the help they need in a way that’s discreet, accessible, and supportive. It’s a real step forward for community pharmacy and for the people we serve.”
The service supports the vital role community pharmacy teams play in tackling health inequalities by offering flexible consultations in private settings. People can self-refer or be signposted by their GP or sexual health clinic, and pharmacists will work with them to make shared decisions about their care.
Steve Hulme, Chief Pharmacist, NHS Derby and Derbyshire, said ” Community pharmacies are an essential part of our healthcare system. They are often the first point of contact for people seeking advice and treatment, and they play a vital role in improving access to care.
“The addition of emergency contraception to the national pharmacy service specification is a significant milestone. It not only increases choice and convenience for patients, but also strengthens the role of pharmacy teams in supporting public health and reducing inequalities.
“We’re proud to support this expansion and confident it will make a meaningful difference to people across Derby and Derbyshire.”
Dr Andrew Mott, GP Partner and Medical Director of the GP Provider Board said “Pharmacists are highly trained to give advice and support, often close to home and at flexible times.
“They’re trusted professionals embedded in their communities, and this service is a great example of the system putting resources in the right place.
“By enabling pharmacies to take on this role, we’re freeing up GP and clinic time for more complex cases, while making it easy for people to get the care they need quickly and safely.”
In addition to contraception services, pharmacies across Derby and Derbyshire provide a wide range of NHS services including:
- Minor ailments consultations through the Pharmacy First scheme
- Blood pressure checks
- Support for long-term conditions
- Vaccinations
- Help with quitting smoking
- Advice on medicines and repeat prescriptions
These services help keep people well, reduce pressure on GP practices and hospitals, and ensure that care is available close to home, often without the need for an appointment.
