Derbyshire GP practices awarded £1.9m to upgrade premises
GP practices in Derby and Derbyshire have today (Tuesday 6 May) been awarded £1.9m to provide more clinical rooms and space to see patients. The Department of Health and Social Care has announced today investment of over £100 million in 1,000 GP surgeries to create additional space to see more patients, boost productivity and improve patient care.
In Derby and Derbyshire 17 improvement projects have been approved – providing space to allow an additional 126,000 additional appointments each year.
GP practices that have been allocated funding will now each appoint contractors to undertake the buildings and improvement works.
Planning permission is already in place where it is needed.
Clive Newman, director of primary care, said: “GP practice staff play an absolutely vital role in supporting the health of their patients – whether through regular check ups and monitoring, managing medication, diagnosing conditions or providing advice and support.
“To do this well they need enough appropriate clinical space for seeing patients in person, or for speaking to patients or other healthcare professionals by phone or by video meeting.
“GPs are delivering more appointments than ever before – up to 7.1m in 2024/25 from 6.8m in 2023/24.
“But sometimes they are constrained from doing even more by not having enough clinical space.
“So we’re very pleased that our proposed improvement programme for the 25/26 year has been fully funded – enabling a further 126,000 annual appointments.
“The improvements will help GPs and their staff to work in a more efficient way and to continue to meet the needs of their patients.”
The approved schemes include:
