Help Derbyshire break a world record in chair-based exercise
This September, Age UK Derby and Derbyshire, Live Stronger for Longer, and Chesterfield FC Community Trust are attempting a world record for the largest number of people taking part in chair-based exercise, and you can be part of it.
The current record is held by the Hong Kong Women Development Association LTD, who set the record on 11 June 2016 with 731 people taking part.
Derbyshire is aiming to surpass that number on 25 September during ‘falls awareness week’ at Chesterfield FC’s stadium with a target of 800.

The event has already caught the attention of BBC Radio Derby, and invitations have been sent to hundreds of people across the county.
The day will begin with a chair-based exercise session led by a main instructor projected onto the stadium screen, supported by four additional instructors positioned around the stands.
Following the session, attendees will have the opportunity to enjoy refreshments and explore a dedicated marketplace featuring a range of health and wellbeing stalls.
Chesterfield FC Community Trust has played a key role in supporting the event. With several members trained in chair-based exercise, they deliver successful exercise sessions at the stadium.
Their commitment to promoting physical activity and access to a venue large enough to accommodate participants make them an ideal partner.
Jo Briggs, lead instructor for the event and falls prevention service manager for Live Stronger for Longer said, “I’m absolutely thrilled to be leading this incredible event.
“Chair-based exercise is a proven way to help older adults maintain strength, balance, and mobility, all of which are essential in reducing the risk of falls.
“Even gentle, seated movements can improve muscle tone, joint flexibility, and coordination, making everyday tasks safer and more manageable.
“I can’t wait to see everyone moving together in the stadium stands.”
Katy Pugh, Chief Executive of Age UK Derby and Derbyshire said: “This isn’t just about breaking records, it’s about breaking barriers and raising awareness of the importance of staying active as we age.
“Through our Live Stronger for Longer programme, we’ve seen first-hand how small steps can lead to big changes in confidence and independence. We hope to see hundreds of people joining us to make history and celebrate healthy ageing together.”
Chair-based exercise is a cornerstone of Derbyshire’s Live Stronger for Longer programme, which supports older people to build strength and confidence, helping them maintain independence and quality of life.
