NHS urges residents to stay safe as hospitals face pressure and storm Goretti approaches
People in Derby and Derbyshire are being urged to choose the right NHS service and take extra care during cold weather, as storm Goretti is forecast to hit the region.
The NHS is here to help you, but Emergency Departments (A&E) and Ambulance crews must remain available for the most serious and life-threatening cases. If your condition is not an emergency, you may experience longer waits at A&E. There may be alternative, more appropriate ways to get help.
Where to go for help
Urgent Treatment Centres (UTCs)
Open 8am–8pm, even on bank holidays. Urgent Treatment Centres can diagnose and treat many problems people often go to A&E for, including:
- Sprains and strains
- Minor fractures
- Cuts and burns
- Stomach pain
- Minor infections
Our Urgent Treatment Centres are located at: Derby UTC (Osmaston Road), Whitworth Hospital, Buxton Hospital, Ripley Hospital, Ilkeston Hospital. Walk in or call NHS 111 to book an appointment.
Pharmacies
Your local pharmacist can help with everyday illnesses such as:
- Coughs, colds and the flu
- Sore throats
- Ear infections
- Aches and pains
Pharmacists can now prescribe medication for some conditions, without needing a GP appointment.
Not sure where to go?
Call NHS 111 or visit 111 online. You’ll be directed to the best service for your needs, often with shorter waiting times.
Stay well during cold weather
Cold weather can have serious consequences for health, especially for older people and those with heart or lung conditions. Keeping warm helps prevent colds, flu, and more serious problems like heart attacks, strokes, and chest infections.
Simple steps to stay safe and well:
- Check the forecast and stay updated on Met Office warnings and UKHSA Weather Health Alerts.
- Stock up on food and medicines to last through the cold spell.
- Keep your home warm, at least 18°C for those at higher risk.
- Dress in layers and wear shoes with good grip outdoors to avoid slips and falls.
- Get vaccinated against flu, RSV, and Covid-19 if eligible.
- Look out for others, check on vulnerable family, friends, and neighbours.
