Proud moments for Derby and Derbyshire at the HSJ Digital Awards

Derby and Derbyshire were proudly represented at the HSJ Digital Awards 2025, which celebrate excellence in digital innovation across the NHS.

Derbyshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust took home two national awards in the ‘Digital Organisation of the Year’, and ‘Generating Impact in Population Health Through Digital’ categories, as well as being named a finalist in the ‘Driving Prevention and Early Intervention Through Digital’ category.

Andrew Fearn, Chief Digital Officer, NHS Derby and Derbyshire ICB, and Nottingham and Nottinghamshire ICB, was highly commended as ‘Digital Leader of the Year’.

The Midlands Collaborative Palliative and End-of-life Care Toolkit team were also highly commended in the ‘Digital Team of the Year’ category.

 Chesterfield Royal Hospital Foundation Trust (CRH) was recognised as a finalist in the ‘Supporting Elective Recovery Through Digital’ category.

“Andrew’s recognition is also incredibly well-deserved. His vision, leadership and collaborative approach have been instrumental in driving forward digital transformation.

“I’d also like to acknowledge the team behind the Midlands Collaborative Palliative and End-of-life Care Toolkit, their work is a powerful example of how partnership and innovation can improve care for people at the most important moments in their lives.

“Congratulations as well to Chesterfield Royal Hospital, these achievements reflect the strength of our local partnerships and commitment to delivering outstanding care.

“There were some fantastic projects shortlisted, and I’m proud to see such impactful work being recognised nationally.” 

Derbyshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust was crowned ‘Digital Organisation of the Year’ for its leadership in digital transformation, including the rollout of a future-proof electronic patient record system.

Their second win celebrates the Trust’s school nursing team, in partnership with The Lancaster Model and Aire Innovate. The project digitalised health needs assessments, benefiting over 15,000 young people and families across Derby City. 

Mark Powell, Chief Executive at Derbyshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, said: “I understand that these wins come at a time of record-breaking participation in the HSJ Digital Awards, with over 430 entries submitted and 205 projects shortlisted. This clearly shows Derbyshire Healthcare’s success through the power of collaboration, clinical leadership, and a shared vision for a digitally enabled NHS.”

Andrew Fearn was celebrated for his instrumental leadership in advancing digital health initiatives for the East Midlands Radiology Network.

Andrew said: “It was really nice to be in a room of digital enthusiasts showing the NHS how it should be done… a great night!”

The Midlands Collaborative Palliative and End-of-life Care Toolkit team were highly commended for improving access to consistent, high-quality end-of-life care digital resources for professionals across the Midlands.

Chesterfield Royal Hospital Foundation Trust was a finalist in ‘Supporting Elective Recovery Through Digital’, showcasing innovation in theatre improvements and elective care pathways.

These achievements reflect Derby and Derbyshire’s dedication to digital excellence and its positive impact on patient care. Congratulations to all the individuals and teams involved.
