The British Transplant Games 2024
The British Transplant Games, an event promoting the life-changing benefits of organ donation and encouraging transplant patients to stay active through sport, is being held close to Derbyshire this year from August 1-4.
The Games, which are happening in neighbouring Nottinghamshire, show the benefits of transplants, helping encourage transplant patients to regain their fitness. It also helps raise awareness about NHS Organ Donation and the difference it can make to people’s lives.
The Nottingham Kidney Transplant Unit, a major transplant centre for both adults and children, serves many patients from Derby and Derbyshire. As our neighbouring city, we would like to take this opportunity to show our support for the teams taking part, some of whom may be Derbyshire residents themselves.
The 2024 British Transplant Games mark the 46th anniversary of the event and is expected to be the largest in recent times, attracting around 2,650 participants, including 1,000 transplant recipients. The Games will see competitors ranging in age from 22 months to 88 years, competing in 25+ different sports over the four-day event.
The need for Organ Donors remains critical. Currently across the UK, around 7,000 people, including 200 children, are waiting for an organ transplant. Unfortunately, only around 1,400 people donate each year which means that on average, someone dies every day waiting for a transplant.
The British Transplant Games provide a platform to celebrate the successes of transplant recipients and highlight the ongoing need for donors. Attending the Games in Nottingham offers a chance to witness the remarkable stories of transplant survivors and to support a cause that benefits many within the Derbyshire community.
We encourage the people of Derby and Derbyshire to support this life-saving cause by registering as an organ donor. By confirming your decision on the NHS Organ Donor Register and informing your family of your wishes, you can potentially save up to nine lives.
