Work to begin on new £3m GP health centre

Work is due to start on a new Derbyshire primary care centre, following agreements reached between the local NHS, two GP practices and a development company.

The centre will provide a modern and accessible space for patients of:

  • Creswell and Langwith Medical Centre, in Creswell, North Derbyshire
  • Crags Healthcare’s surgery at Creswell, North Derbyshire

Contracts were signed this week for the £3m building project on the cleared site of a former Methodist chapel on Elmton Road in the centre of Creswell, within easy reach of the local pharmacy. Vehicle access will be from Colliery Road.

Building work is expected to be complete at the end of this year and to open to patients in early 2027.

It will provide:

  • six clinical consulting rooms and two treatment rooms for patients of Creswell and Langwith Medical Centre
  • one consulting room and one treatment room for patients of Crags
  • a shared waiting area and separate reception desks for the two practices
  • accessible spaces for wheelchairs and people with disabilities
  • 27 car parking spaces

The new centre at Elmton Road will replace the current Creswell and Langwith surgery building on Welbeck Street, Creswell, which is outdated and not large enough.

It will also replace the current Crags site at Elmton Road, Creswell, which is not accessible for people with disabilities and has no dedicated car parking.

The project to create a new primary care centre in Creswell has faced a number of challenges over many years, but the signing of contracts this week means work will now begin.

The new building at Creswell follows a separate project to provide a new building for the Langwith branch of Creswell and Langwith Medical Centre, completed in 2019. This also replaced an outdated building in Langwith, near Mansfield, Nottinghamshire.

Creswell and Langwith Medical Centre is a part of Derbyshire Community Health Services NHS Foundation Trust. It will be the lead tenant of the building and it will sub-let space to Crags Healthcare.

The costs of the new building are being met using:

  • investment from Derbyshire Community Health Services NHS Foundation Trust
  • investment from NHS Derby and Derbyshire Integrated Care Board
  • “section 106” contributions secured by Bolsover District Council from developers of new housing on approved sites on Colliery Road and Skinner Street, nearby.

Work will be carried by Atkinson Construction Group.

Maria Principe, executive director of commissioning for NHS Derby and Derbyshire, said: “We are very pleased to have reached agreement with the two practices and Welbeck to build a modern and accessible health centre for Creswell.

“Once opened it will provide much improved facilities for patients and an improved working environment for staff.

“It is part of our ongoing commitment to invest in general practice, helping with the NHS’s long term ambition to shift care from hospital to the community.”

Jim Austin, chief executive of Derbyshire Community Health Services NHS Foundation Trust, said: “We are excited to begin work soon on this long-anticipated new medical centre for patients in Creswell.

“The current GP premises on Welbeck Street have served the Creswell community for many years but are outgrown and outdated.

“This new development will offer all the benefits of a modern healthcare environment with good accessibility and space, specifically designed to be a welcoming place for patients to receive care and for our teams to work in too.

“It is seven years since we opened the purpose-designed Langwith Health Centre on Main Street and this latest development will bring the Creswell facilities up to the same modern standards, with the additional bonus of cementing greater partnership work with Crags Healthcare in a shared space.”

Councillor Jane Yates, leader of Bolsover District Council, said: “This new health centre has been long sought after by the council and the local community and will be funded through a proactive public-private partnership that has seen investment from the local NHS organisations and Section 106 planning contributions secured by Bolsover District Council on approved housing sites in Creswell.

“I am absolutely thrilled to see these infrastructure investment plans and the benefits of growth coming to fruition, with this new GP surgery replacing well used but outdated facilities and so give the people of Creswell a modern and functional building to go to for their health needs.”

Natalie Fleet, MP for Bolsover, said: “I am absolutely thrilled that Creswell is finally getting a brand new, modern GP surgery, which will be massively beneficial for the community.

“It will mean that patients have got somewhere nice to go for their medical appointments and staff have a great place to work.”

Daren Atkinson, managing director for Atkinson Construction group, said: “After nearly ten years since we became involved in this project we are pleased to now progress what will be an excellent, much needed, facility for Creswell.”
