Colleagues in local authorities have provided a wide range of information about changes to council services and advice for local people on related matters during the Covid-19 pandemic. Local authorities also take the lead on public health and their websites contain useful information about the local situation with the virus.

Community response units
We have two community response units in Derbyshire:
Both of these services offer support to people who are vulnerable and/or self-isolating, aided by volunteers. Referrals for help and to volunteer can be made by phone or online – see weblinks above.
Crich mutual aid
Crich Mutual Aid is a community network providing a co-ordinated response in Crich and South Wingfield to the Coronavirus crisis. The network provides help for shopping, meals, prescriptions, pet care, post or just a friendly chat. Call the network helpline on 01773 447533.
Bolsover community support team
Bolsover District Council has set up a community support team to provide advice and support to those affected by Covid-19. The council is inviting residents who are self-isolating and in need of assistance to register with the support team. This will help the council direct resources to the most vulnerable people in the district.

Services for deaf people
During the Covid-19 pandemic Communication Unlimited are still providing BSL interpreting services for deaf people, assisting with telephone triage, and appointments via a videophone service liaising between the deaf person and the health professional. How to stay active while you are at home
Active Derbyshire has created an Active at Home webpage to help provide individuals with tools and ideas about what they can be doing to stay active. A leaflet (opens document) has been produced as part of the Sport England Join the Movement campaign to help older people stay active at home.
Living with or after a cancer diagnosis
- HOPE (opens document) is an online self-management programme which can help with smarter goal setting, living positively with fears for the future, physical activity, eating well, managing stress, coping with fatigue and finding things to be thankful for.
- Affected by cancer? Volunteer ‘buddies’ who have previously been diagnosed with prostate, breast or other cancers, or have cared for someone with cancer, are available to talk. Going through cancer can be an isolating and lonely experience, particularly when people cannot leave their homes because of shielding and social distancing measures. During this difficult time many carers will be feeling isolated, concerned about themselves and their loved ones’ health as well as the impact on the services they depend upon.
If you are a carer you can access support through Derbyshire Carers Association. The team are contacting Derbyshire’s most vulnerable carers to review their current situation, address any concerns and make sure that carers and their families are connected to support services. These include services such as food deliveries, prescription collections and befriending.
The Derbyshire Young Carers Service are still taking referrals and offering support to families during the COVID-19 lockdown. Download the referral form.
Anyone dealing with bereavement can contact Cruse Bereavement Care. Their website has supportive information to help anyone deal with their difficult emotions and situation if they have been bereaved. For young people there is the Cruse website Hope Again.
To contact Derbyshire Cruse for free bereavement support for adults from trained bereavement volunteers phone your nearest office, leave your name and contact number and you will be called back. Phone messages are regularly checked.

Citizens Advice phone support
While currently unable to take face-to-face enquiries, Citizens Advice have increased their capacity to provide telephone support. They can provide free, confidential, impartial and independent advice on any issue, from holiday cancellations to financial worries.
The Derbyshire office can be contacted between 9am and 4pm, Monday to Friday, on 0300 456 8390 (calls charged at the 01 or 02 number rate).
They also have a freephone number dedicated to helping people claim for universal credit: 0800 144 8 144, available Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm.
We know that Covid-19 will have a serious impact on the lives of women, children and men who are experiencing domestic abuse. Fears over jobs, financial pressure, school closures, working from home and all the other current changes to our day-to-day lives are likely to result in an increase in domestic abuse incidents.
