The course, called ‘X-PERT Health Diabetes Programme’, is award winning and delivers structured education over 6 weeks in sessions of 2½ hours per week. X-PERT stands for ‘Expert Education versus Routine Treatment’. You’ll attend the course along with other people who also want to do the same.

The course was developed by Dr Trudi Deakin to help people self-manage their condition, health and quality of life. The education programme meets the key criteria identified by the Department of Health, Diabetes UK and the National Institute for Health & Clinical Excellence (NICE).

What is Diabetes?

Diabetes is a common condition in which the amount of glucose in the blood at diagnosis is too high because the body cannot use the glucose as energy. Diabetes occurs when the body does not produce enough insulin, or produces insulin but cannot use it properly. There are two types of diabetes:

  • Type 1 diabetes occurs when there is a severe lack of insulin in the body because the cells in the pancreas that produce it have been destroyed.
  • Type 2 diabetes develops when the body can still make some insulin, but not enough for its needs, or when the insulin that is produced does not work properly (known as insulin resistance).

How will the X-PERT Programme benefit me?

You will have the opportunity to explore and learn about prevention or management of diabetes and the up-to-date treatments and approaches. There will be a chance to address concerns that you have with your lifestyle such as dietary intake and physical activity levels.

The aim of X-PERT is not to tell you what you should and shouldn’t do, but to help you identify what you would like to do and how you would like to do it. You will be supported in setting your own realistic goals. The programme will help you to:

  • reduce blood glucose levels, reduce blood pressure and improve the ratio of fats in the blood
  • lose weight and reduce your waist size
  • adopt a healthier dietary intake whilst also increasing enjoyment of food
  • become more active
  • reduce the risk of developing further health problems
  • increase your confidence and ability to look after your health
  • reduce depression and improve quality of life
  • reduce prescribed medication.

Who can attend?

You can attend whether you have just found out you have diabetes or whether you have been living with it for years. X-PERT Education provides tools and techniques to help you manage your condition better. A clinical trial has demonstrated that attendance significantly improves health and wellbeing. You must also be aged 18 or over.

How much does it cost?

How long is the course?
