New GP practice branch for housing site

A new GP surgery branch is to be built in South Derbyshire to provide for the healthcare needs of the growing local population.

Newhall Surgery, in Swadlincote, has been awarded the right to build the facility on the Drakelow housing development site, near Burton-on-Trent.

It will be a branch of the current surgery but will provide all the same services and will grow to support an equal number of patients as the existing surgery, which has a patient list of 11,000.

The branch will provide:

  • comprehensive primary care and general practice services
  • specialist theatre services and treatment room services
  • specialist clinics and support groups
  • health promotion and wellbeing programmes
  • chronic disease management
  • adult and child health services
  • wound clinics
  • home visiting and district nursing services
  • in-house pharmacy (subject to approval)
  • sexual health and contraception clinics
  • clinical pharmacist services
  • minor surgery clinics
  • immunisation & vaccination clinics
  • GP and medical student training
  • palliative & end of life care

Julie Emmerson-Grey, business manager for Newhall Surgery, said: “We are excited to announce plans for a new state-of-the-art branch site in Drakelow, which will serve as a comprehensive healthcare hub for the local community and surrounding areas.

“The proposed facility will significantly expand access to high-quality medical services and provide a modern, patient-centred environment that promotes well-being and health innovation.

“The branch will accommodate a wide range of healthcare services under one roof, allowing patients to receive coordinated care in a single location.

“By investing in this modern facility, we are ensuring that our community has access to cutting-edge medical services, while also fostering a space for patient comfort, convenience, and holistic care.”

Newhall Surgery was chosen by NHS Derby and Derbyshire Integrated Care Board to build the new branch following submission and assessment of bids from local practices.

The GP practice will use its own funds and “section 106” funds provided by the developers of the housing site to build the branch.

The surgery will now appoint contractors to manage the planning and building. Building work is expected to begin in 2026 and the site to open in mid 2028.

The branch building will also feature:

  • the latest standards in medical technology and sustainability
  • eco-friendly design elements such as energy-efficient systems
  • green spaces that promote both environmental responsibility and patient well-being
  • seamless integration of telemedicine services, ensuring that patients have flexible care options in person and remotely
  • easy access, with ample parking, public transportation links, and provisions for disabled access

Clive Newman, director of primary care for NHS Derby and Derbyshire Integrated Care Board, said: “Hundreds more people will come to live in the new housing in Drakelow over the coming years as the site is developed.

“This new branch to be provided by Newhall Surgery will ensure those new residents have access to the full range of services from a GP practice that is local to them.”
