Information for NHS dental patients in Chesterfield

NHS dental patients in the Chesterfield area are being offered guidance and support in finding an NHS dentist.

It follows a decision by Wisdom Dental, Chesterfield, to stop providing NHS dental services.

NHS Derby and Derbyshire has taken the following action:

  • NHS funding previously allocated to Wisdom has been made available to two other nearby practices. These are Brimington Dental and JDSP Dental.
  • It has provided additional NHS funding to two other practices: Staveley Dental and Glen Thelwell & Associates. This funding has been allocated in line with NHS Derby and Derbyshire’s dental strategy to tackle priority areas of identified need.
  • It has allocated national government funding for urgent and emergency appointments to 10 practices – four of which are located in Chesterfield.

These actions are aimed at supporting people who need NHS treatment in Chesterfield area. That includes former patients both of Wisdom Dental, but also other people in the locality.

The arrangements do not guarantee the ability to receive NHS treatments because appointments are subject to each dentist’s own availability.

Clive Newman, director of primary care for NHS Derby and Derbyshire, said: “Unfortunately Wisdom Dental in Chesterfield have informed us they will no longer carry out NHS funded treatments.

“If you were an NHS patient at Wisdom Dental you should have been told about their decision.

“As a short term measure we have funded four local dental practices to undertake additional NHS treatments.

“However, it is not possible for former patients of Wisdom Dental simply to transfer to another practice.

“While this funding will support additional appointments elsewhere, they are subject to the dentist’s availability and the total funding available.

“We absolutely recognise the challenge of finding an NHS dentist in Chesterfield and elsewhere in the county.

“We have recently agreed a three year plan for dentistry and oral health. This is focused on the areas of greatest need – where oral health is worst and where access to an NHS dentist is most difficult.

“We are also delivering 14,000 urgent appointments, which is part of the government’s initiative to provide 700,000 more appointments nationally.”

If you were an NHS patient at Wisdom Dental and wish to access your medical records, please contact them directly.
