NHS urges residents to stay safe following Cold Weather Warning from the MET Office

Residents in Derby and Derbyshire are being urged to keep warm and look out for friends and family who may be vulnerable to cold weather after the Met Office issued a Yellow Cold-health alert this week.

Cold weather can have serious consequences for health, and older people and those with heart or lung conditions can be particularly at risk.

Keeping warm can help prevent colds, flu, and more serious health problems such as heart attacks, strokes, and chest infections.

The NHS in Derby and Derbyshire is reminding people to take extra care during cold-weather spells and make preparations to protect yourself and others.

  • Check the weather forecast and the news regularly to stay updated on any changes in the weather. Keep an eye out for UKHSA Weather Health Alerts and Met Office National Severe Weather Warnings, which will provide guidance on any actions to take.
  • Ensure you have enough food and medicine to last through the cold spell. Take simple steps to reduce draughts at home.
  • For those at higher risk, such as individuals aged 65 and older, those with health conditions, or those with limited mobility, ensure your home is heated to at least 18°C to stay warm and comfortable.
  • Avoid exposure to cold or icy conditions. If you need to go outside, wear shoes that provide good grip to avoid slips and falls.
  • If you are eligible, get vaccinated against flu, RSV, and Covid-19 to help protect yourself during the winter period.

Please take these simple steps to protect your health and well-being. Look out for vulnerable family members, neighbours, and friends, particularly those who may need extra support in the cold weather.

If you are feeling unwell, please don’t delay getting advice and treatment. Your local pharmacy can treat things like sore throats, coughs, and colds, without needing an appointment.

Urgent Treatment Centres are open 8am-8pm, even over the bank holiday, and can treat a range of urgent care needs.

If you need health advice but aren’t sure what to do, ring NHS 111 or visit NHS 111 online.

A spokesperson for NHS Derby and Derbyshire said:

“During cold spells like this, it is important to check in on family, friends and relatives who may be more vulnerable to the cold weather, as it can have a serious impact on health.

“Keep in touch with others and ask if they need any practical help such as stocking up on food and medicine. If you’re worried about someone else’s health, contact your local pharmacist, your GP or NHS 111 for advice and support”.
