It is a basic need for people to understand more about their health and wellbeing. Yet almost half of all adults have limited health literacy and struggle to understand everyday health information.

Health Literacy Awareness Sessions

Register for free online training to better understand health literacy and it’s importance. You will learn:

  • What health literacy is and why it is important.
  • What it might mean to have low levels of health literacy.
  • What other teams have done in practice and what you could do.
  • Where to find more information about health literacy.

Why does it matter?

Anyone can struggle with poor health literacy at any time, but particularly when in stressful and anxious situations. However, low health literacy is more common in some groups including:

  • Those with long term conditions
  • Older people
  • Those in low socioeconomic groups
  • Those with disabilities
  • Those from ethnic minority backgrounds

What can we do to help?

Providing reliable easy-to-understand health information (written and verbal) can help people to:

  • Make the best decisions about their health.
  • Be more confident to take an active part in planning their own care.
What difference will it make?

Supporting people to have greater knowledge and understanding about their health can have a huge impact on how they:

  • Recover from illness.
  • Respond to treatment.
  • Manage a long-term condition.
